Abstract: | The project aims to develop a design proposal for up gradation of the silk handloom weavers of Varanasi. The problem with the silk weaver’s life and work is making rounds all over and a number of proposals have been made and worked upon addressing the various issues namely-lack of work, terrible living conditions, losing the art of weaving per generation, dying opportunities for their work to thrive as in the old days. In case of Silk Handloom Weavers of Varanasi, the craft is not just a livelihood option; it is a way of their life. They live the craft. The weavers have been born and brought up amidst the craft of weaving. IT gives a character and sense to the place. But since the silk weaving industry is dying and losing its character, it calls for intervention to activate the area and bring the interest of the locals as well as the tourists back into the community working of the silk weavers. Hence, the thesis aims to study the existing locality of silk weavers in Varanasi not only by mapping the way of life and work but also the social construct. This in order to create nodes or hubs of that can be integrated within the existing fabric. To provide adjustments or additions in order to create breathing and working space while being respectful to their architectural heritage and cultural heritage and hopefully adding to their trade and income. The idea behind integrating the facilities within the existing fabric is to bring back the interest in to the area and help the weavers’ society to feel as a host to the numerous opportunities and people that may come to them. This may help put the dying craft back as major attraction for the people. They can pass through the centre and have an experience of the livelihood of the weavers. |
