Abstract: | Democracy is the world’s most preferred form of governance. People centric and public defined, it is one of the most influential society shaping systems in action today and has been a popular choice since its inception. Democracy ticks all the right boxes, where in, it includes people’s opinions, their diversities, their preferences etc. and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that progress made under democracy clearly reflects and represents the society, it concerns. On the other hand, Architecture involves establishments for and around people. People closely associate with it on account of common usage or shared ideals. Architecture, has and continues to, act as a canvas and a mirror of the cultural systems, which defines its users. Therefore, it becomes an important question to look into how systems of Democracy and architecture have shaped each other. Different perceptions, contradiction and controversies remain in definition of democracy but the universal core idea remains the same that is democracy is everything for people, by the people and of the people. My thesis will be oriented more on the creating an architecture for the people and look for principles of democracy in architecture. And the legislative assemblies has been taken as a place where architecture and democracy meets. The legislative buildings embodies an image or commanding presence of state and evokes the identity pride and discourse of power, moreover it represents tradition, stability and authority. The main objective lies in developing an appropriate state of architecture that meets the people of the state of Chhattisgarh and further explore the democratic language of assembly building and balancing act between need for security and openness along with public realm. |
