Waterfront i.e. riverfronts, seafronts and lakefronts that were the industrial birthplace for many cities remain pristine locations. Riverfronts have redefined and given a special character and personality to a city when laid importance upon, thus revitalized into a unique city feature. The thesis is aimed at developing a successful recreational riverfront along the Ganges River in the city of Kanpur. The main architectural considerations have been adopted to create a vibrant riverfront for people to enjoy the ambience of the place. The architectural focus has been laid on Museum, Semi-open theatre, Entertainment/Activity center. Innovative design approach for ghats, promenade, landscape seating area, pub, restaurants and commercial shops is followed. Emphasis has been laid on various destinations which are connected through tissues (parks, promenades, pedestrian bridges). The architectural language of these destinations would change in order to allow flow of public from one destination to another. The user experience has been the main concept for designing the entire riverfront. The industrial and polluted image of the city of Kanpur has to been changed and this thesis aims at rejuvenating the old city along the banks of River Ganges. A functional design with efficient landscape would make an ideal riverfront for visitors to experience a great day.en_US
